The University of Greenwich ( English University of Greenwich ) is a British university . Its main site, the Maritime Greenwich Campus with the main building, the Old Royal Naval College , and the Avery Hill campus are located in south-east London . In addition, the university also has a campus in Chatham in Medway in the county of Kent .

The university has no connection with the Royal Greenwich Observatory , the reference point for determining the prime meridian .

history

The university's historical beginnings date back to 1890 when the educational institution was founded as Woolwich Polytechnic. In 1970, a number of higher education institutions were combined under the name Thames Polytechnic . Through the incorporation of the Dartford College (1976), Avery Hill College (1985), Garnett College (1987), parts of the Goldsmiths College and the City of London Polytechnic (1988) was a university with a wide range of services from the teacher training on the architecture to on finance , engineering and history . In 1992 Thames Polytechnic was renamed to its current name.

The university has expanded rapidly, maintaining campuses in historic Greenwich, Avery Hill and the maritime Chatham in Kent. The university receives support from numerous large companies in the pharmaceutical industry, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation , the ESA and the Indian and Saudi Arabian governments.

Students

In 2018/2019 the university had 18,945 students (2005: 20,000, 2017/2018: 18,805), of which 11,100 were women. 14,740 students came from Great Britain, 4,200 students were from outside Germany, 2,830 of them from the European Union. 14,432 were about to graduate and 4,512 were postgraduates. The university is one of the medium-sized in Great Britain and is one of the most international in the country with many learners from India (1,371), Bangladesh (1,036), or Pakistan (608), as well as Nigeria, China (835), Sri Lanka and the European Union.
