John Chippewa Crerar

John Chippewa Crerar (born March 8, 1827 in New York , † October 19, 1889 ibid) was an American industrialist and philanthropist .

Life

His parents were immigrants from Scotland and his father died early. He began his career in his stepfather's New York office. When he met the banker Morris Ketchum Jesup in 1856, he took over the management of the company. He founded the John Crerar Library , now part of the University of Chicago .
