John Clare (born July 13, 1793 in Helpston , Northamptonshire , † May 19, 1864 ) was an English naturalist and known as one of the best descriptors of country life .

Life

John Clare was born on July 13, 1793 in Helpstone, the son of a day laborer . Despite very little educational resources, he developed happily and quickly. James Thomson's Seasons awakened his poetic talent and inspired the 13-year-old to the song The morning walk and its counterpart The evening walk . John Turnill at Helpstone took him on and taught him writing and arithmetic. Clare earned his living by handicrafts and playing the violin , he sang of God and nature for his own pleasure. In 1818 his sonnet on the setting sun came into the hands of the bookseller Drury at Hamford, and the latter prompted the edition of a collection of Clare's poems descriptive of rural life and scenery , which aroused general interest. Another equally successful collection of his poems appeared under the title The village minstrel, and other poems . Having thereby come into possession of a small fortune, Clare settled in Helpstone, but fell into misery through unfortunate land speculation . He died on May 19, 1864 in a psychiatric hospital.
