William Hilton
William Hilton (born June 3, 1786 in Lincoln , Lincolnshire , † December 30, 1839 in London ) was an English painter .
Life
Hilton was the son of a portrait painter. He was first a student of the engraver John Raphael Smith , then from 1800 the Royal Academy of Arts and finally turned to history painting of the higher style. After several works of mythological content for the picture he received the keys from Calais to King Edward III. (1810) a price of 50 guineas .
He then devoted himself to Christian art until a trip to Italy in 1818 aroused in him the desire to revisit mythological and historical objects. He was elected a member of the Academy in 1820 and died in London in 1839.
