Sir John Gilbert (born July 1, 1817 in Blackheath , London , † October 5, 1897 ) was an English painter and watercolorist. He became known through his drawings for the Illustrated London News and the London Journal , but above all through his book illustrations for works by William Shakespeare and Charles Dickens . Although he was self-taught, Gilbert mastered numerous artistic techniques. The focus of his work was on woodcuts and watercolors .

Although he was not academically trained - he had not made it to the Royal Academy School - he exhibited at both schools from 1836 . In 1854 Gilbert became a member of the Society of Painters in Water Colors , a society that initially tried, in contrast to the Royal Academy, for better recognition of watercolor painting as an art form. From 1871 John Gilbert led the Society of Painters in Water Colors as president. Under his presidency, the Society of Painters in Water Colors was recognized as the Royal Society of Painters in Water Colors (since 1988 Royal Watercolor Society ). In 1872 Gilbert was raised to the nobility as a Knight Bachelor .
