John H. Atkinson

John Herbert Atkinson (born October 3, 1942 ) is a British civil engineer ( geotechnical engineering ).

Atkinson studied civil engineering and soil mechanics at Imperial College , London. He then carried out research at Cambridge University and was a senior lecturer at University College Cardiff , before becoming a reader in 1980 and professor of soil mechanics at City University London from 1985 . There he founded the Geotechnical Engineering Research Center and was a co-founder of the London Geocentrifuge Center (London Geotechnical Centrifuge Center). He spent ten years as a geotechnical consulting engineer for Ove Arup and Partners and for Coffey Geotechnics.

He advised in Australia, the Great Man Made River project in Libya , geotechnical projects in Cairo and in the North Sea.

In 1994 he gave the Rankine Lecture (Non-linear soil stiffness in routine design). He was director of the Geological Society's engineering geology division. He is the editor of Geotechnique .
