John Holland (athlete)
John Holland ( John Macfarlane "Dutch" Holland; born December 20, 1926 in Auckland ; † June 9, 1990 ) was a New Zealand athlete who mainly competed in the hurdles .
After Holland had missed the finals in the 400-meter hurdles at the Olympic Games in London in 1948 , he celebrated his first international medals at the British Empire Games in 1950 in his hometown. In the 440-yard hurdles he won the silver medal behind Duncan White from Ceylon. He also finished third in the 4-by-440-yard season with his teammates David Batten , Derek Stewart and Jack Sutherland . He finished fifth over the 120 yard hurdles.
Holland achieved his most important result at the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki. In the 400-meter hurdles he won the bronze medal behind the Americans Charles Moore and Juri Litujew from the Soviet Union.
In addition, the 1.91 m tall and 81 kg heavy Holland was eleven times New Zealand champion. On February 23, 1952, he set a New Zealand record in Hamilton over 440 yard hurdles with 52.2 s (equivalent to 51.9 s over 400 m hurdles), which was only broken more than ten years later by Roger Johnson .
Holland was married and had two sons. Originally he was a teacher, but later worked for the Shell oil company for a long time .
