John J. Grebe

John Josef Grebe , born as Hans Josef Grebe (born February 1, 1900 in Ürzig , Rhineland, † 1984 ) was a German-American physicist .

The son of Carl and Gertrude (Erbes) Grebe came to the United States in Ohio at the age of 14, where he acquired US citizenship seven years later. After being at the Case School of Applied Science his Bachelor of Science had acquired in physics, he began in 1921 at Dow Chemical , he worked for 41 years. He founded the Dow Physical Research Laboratory and was its director. He holds 64 patents. He built nuclear reactors for submarines for the government and was instrumental in the development of polystyrene , styrofoam (a common trade name for polystyrene foam in the USA ) and saran . After he retired in 1965, he lived in Sun City, Arizona .
