John Jefferys

John Jefferys (* 1701 ; † 1754 ) was an English watchmaker from London .

His parents, John and Jane Jefferys, lived in a house called Darbies in the Berkshire County village of Midgham . His father was a wool dealer. His maternal grandparents were William and Bridgett Yeats. He had at least five brothers and a sister. Although his father was a Quaker, he was baptized on March 18, 1701. In 1723 his grandmother's sister, Jane Tull, bequeathed the family home to him.

On November 4, 1717, he began an apprenticeship as a watchmaker with Edward Jagger in Well Close Square in Stepney , London. After nine years of apprenticeship he became a member of the Clockmakers Company of London on January 26, 1726 and remained so until 1735. In 1735 he took Larcum Kendall as an apprentice. Around 1753 he built a pocket watch for the watchmaker John Harrison . After his death, Kendall took over his workshop.
