John Kay (inventor)
John Kay (born June 17, 1704 in Bury , Lancashire , † around 1780) was a British entrepreneur and inventor . Its most important innovation was the high-speed loom (1733).
The flying shooter or rapid shooter is one of the first improvements in the mechanization of weaving . While the shuttles previously had to be "shot" alternately by hand through the "shed" (the alternately opened warp threads), which required two weavers for very wide goods, It was now possible to operate a wide loom with just one weaver. By operating a cord , which in turn operates the so-called picker, the quick shooter shoots from shooter box to shooter box through the shed. This technique made it possible to produce significantly more tissue. As a result of this improvement, England could hardly keep up with the production of yarn . Up to ten spinners worked for a weaver.
In 1753 textile workers raided his house because they were afraid that the new looms would deprive them of their livelihood. Thereupon John Kay left England for France , where he is said to have died in poor conditions around 1780.
