John Kennedy (DJ)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

John Kennedy (born June 1, 1965 ) is a British radio DJ who is best known in Germany for his weekly program Up From The Underground on BFBS Radio Germany.

Life

John Kennedy worked as a disc jockey while studying at Thames Valley University and organized a regular club night with a friend in London called the Plastic Factory . He also volunteered for the local cable broadcaster Radio Thamesmead .

In 1991, at the Reading Festival , he met Sammy Jacobs, a former operator of pirate stations who had just received a license to operate the XFM radio station. Kennedy was hired by Jacobs for its new station and is now the only moderator on the team who has been with the company since the beginning.

In his radio show X-posure (Monday to Thursday from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.), John Kennedy primarily introduces new groups and solo artists from the alternative and indie sectors. The spectrum of styles ranges from electronica to garage rock . Many bands that have meanwhile become known, such as Razorlight , Bloc Party or The Polyphonic Spree , were presented to a wider public for the first time in his program. In the obituary for the late John Peel , Steve Jelbert wrote on October 14, 2005 in the London Times that John Kennedy was the closest musical equivalent to Peel.

Kennedy performs live once or twice a month as part of the X-posure events in London and Manchester. For his live shows he was awarded the Time Out Live Award 2005/06 .

Moderator at BFBS

Since May 16, 2004, John Kennedy has hosted the weekly program Up From The Underground at BFBS (in Germany on BFBS Radio on Sundays from 10 p.m. to midnight). The concept is similar to that of X-posure , with the difference that it is also reminiscent of "classics" from the indie area. The Underground Legends section was set up for this.
