John Kenyon Netherton Jones

John Kenyon Netherton Jones (born January 28, 1912 in Birmingham , † April 13, 1977 in Kingston , Ontario ) was an English chemist.

Jones was the son of a shipping agent and studied from 1930 chemistry at the University of Birmingham with a bachelor's degree in 1933. He was then in industry and dealt with the synthesis of ascorbic acid . In 1936 he received his doctorate under Walter Norman Haworth and was a lecturer at the University of Bristol , was a lecturer in Manchester in 1946 and again in Bristol from 1948. In 1953 he became a professor at Queen's University in Kingston.

He dealt with the chemistry of carbohydrates, especially the elucidation of the structure of various vegetable gums , whereby he developed special processes (periodic oxidation technique, automated fraction cutter ). Later in Canada he also dealt with celluloses, biochemistry of microorganisms and antibiotics.
