John Knox (painter)
John Knox (* 1778 in Paisley ; † 1845 ) was a Scottish landscape painter .
Life
John Knox was the son of a yarn merchant who settled in Glasgow with his family in 1799 . His teacher was most likely the painter Alexander Nasmyth ; in any case, Knox first appears in the existing records as a portrait painter . There is no evidence of his career between 1812 and 1816, but in 1817 there are again indications of activities as a drawing teacher , and in 1821 he finally identifies himself as a landscape painter.
In 1823 he published a collection of lithographs under the title Scottish Scenerie Drawn upon Stone . In 1829 he participated in the exhibition of the Glasgow Dilettanti Society with a panorama picture of the summit of Ben Lomond . Knox lived in London from 1828 to 1836 and exhibited pictures at the Royal Academy of Arts and the British Institution , including a view of Brussels (1831) and scenes from the Lake District and Scotland .
Knox enjoyed a high reputation as a teacher and counted among others Horatio McCulloch and William Leighton Leitch among his students.
