John Lestrange, 1st Baron Strange of Knockin (* 1254 - 8 August 1309 ), was an English nobleman and general.

Family and life

The family is descended from John I. Lestrange, the great-grandfather of the 1st Baron, who was enfeoffed with a small estate in 1158. The grandfather of the 1st Baron was John III. Lestrange , his father was John IV. Lestrange, who was born on an unknown date, died on February 26, 1277 when his son was 22 years old. John V. Lestrange entered the king's service in 1277 and served Edward I in the campaign against Wales. 'As the King's Yeoman' he got his father's debt forgiven. For the war against Wales he was mobilized for the period from December 12, 1276 to 1287. Since he had obviously proven himself, he was called up for military service again, this time to Portsmouth in 1294 to take part in the campaign against France. From 1298 to 1308 he also took part in the war against the Scots . By Writ of Summons on September 26, 1299, he was appointed to Parliament and thus elevated to 1st Baron Strange of Knockin . From then on he sealed as Johannes Lestrange, dominus de Knokin . On February 25, 1308 he took part in the coronation of Edward II .

His first marriage was to Alienore de Somery and his second marriage to Maud Deyville. His heir became his son John Lestrange, 2nd Baron Strange of Knockin . His younger son Hamo inherited an estate in Hunstanton , Norfolk, his daughter Elizabeth married Gruffydd ap Madog , a son of Madog ap Gruffydd of Glyndyfrdwy , a descendant of the princes of Powys Fadog . She was the mother of Gruffydd Fychan II and thus the grandmother of Owain Glyndŵr .
