John McAlpine

John McAlpine (* 1947 in Rawene , New Zealand) is a New Zealand classical pianist and composer who has emerged primarily as an interpreter of new music .

Career

McAlpine studied science at the University of Canterbury and from 1969 to 1972 at Victoria University music with Diny Schramm and Barry Margan. In 1973 he moved to Germany to study piano with Aloys Kontarsky and Wilhelm Hecker at the Cologne University of Music . As a pianist, he has given concerts in New Zealand, the USA and numerous European countries and has participated in radio productions and recordings of contemporary music. McAlpine can be heard on albums with works by John Cage , Walter Zimmermann , Chris Newman , Maria de Alvear , Jürg Frey , Makiko Nishikaze and Tom Johnson . Composers such as Chris Newman, Howard Skempton , Albrecht Zummach , Michael Pisaro , Tom Johnson, Makiko Nishikaze and Clarence Barlow have dedicated works to him. From 2005 to 2015 McAlpine was the artistic director of the project ensemble 05 , which performs new music with the participation of laypeople.
