John McCullough (basketball player)

John McCullough (born October 5,  1956 in Lima (Ohio) ) is an American basketball coach and former player.

career

He played as a teenager at Lima Senior High School in Ohio , followed by four years at the University of Oklahoma (1975 to 1979). The 1.93-meter-tall winger achieved 1507 points, the third-best value in the team's history at the time of his departure from the university, his 381 basket assists were even the best performance, but this was exceeded by several players in the following years, as was his points yield . In the 1978/79 season McCullough was named Player of the Year in the Big 8 Conference .

The Kansas City Kings secured  the rights to McCullough in the 1979 NBA draft proceedings, he was called in the fourth selection round in a total of 85th place. He was given a contract by Kansas City, but removed from the squad before the start of the 1979/80 season. In preparation for the 1980/81 season he was part of the Phoenix Suns squad , again missed the leap into the season squad , but was signed by Phoenix at the end of April 1981. At first he was not used, he then gave his NBA debut during the 1981/82 season, when he was back under contract with Phoenix between mid-October 1981 and mid-December 1981. McCullough was in a total of eight NBA games on the field, but received just under three minutes of play per game and scored an average of 2.6 points per encounter. In addition to his short-term contract with the Phoenix Suns, he played in the 1981/82 season with the Billings Volcanos in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA). There he posted 10.3 points per game in 33 games. In the game year 1982/83 he was in the same league in the service of the Ohio Mixers (28 missions: 9.0 points / game).

At the beginning of the 1983/84 season he received a short-term offer from the French first division club EB Orthez , which he accepted. He played in Orthez under coach George Fisher , a compatriot McCulloughs. In March 1984 they won the European club competition Korać Cup , McCullough was the best basket scorer in the final with 29 points. In the game year 1984/85 he scored an average of 18.6 points per game in 25 missions in the French league, and also had 6.1 rebounds and 5 assists per game.

After the two years in France, McCullough ended his playing career and became a coach. He joined East Carolina University  in 1985 as an assistant coach . From 1986 to 1988 he was under Dave Bliss, for whom he had played at the University of Oklahoma, assistant coach at Southern Methodist University . In 1988 McCullough returned to the field as a player for the summer season, wearing the colors of the Las Vegas Silver Streaks team in the World Basketball League. Between 1988 and 1996 he was an assistant coach at the University of New Mexico and from 1996 to 2000 head coach at New Mexico Highlands University .

In 2000 he moved to Oklahoma Baptist University , where he became the head coach of the women. He stayed in office until 2012. Under his leadership, "OBU" won the championship title twice in the Sooner Athletic Conference and in 2009 made it into the top four of the NAIA . McCullough left Oklahoma Baptist University to accept an offer from the Portland Trailblazers NBA team  . There he was under Terry Stotts , who had become his close friend during the time they played together at the University of Oklahoma, as a player scout. In June 2016, McCullough was promoted to assistant coach in Portland.
