John Momis

John Lawrence Momis (* 1942 in Salamaua ) is the third president of the autonomous region of Bougainville (Autonomous Region of Bougainville) , the only autonomous region in Papua New Guinea .

Momis grew up in Morou Village, near Buin , in southern Bougainville. He obtained his secondary school diploma in Australia . In 1970 he was after training in Papua New Guinea and the St. Brendan's College in Yeppoon , Australia to Catholic priests ordained .

John Momis was elected seven times as a member for Bougainville in the Parliament of Papua New Guinea from 1972 to 2002. From 1972 to 1975 he was the de facto chairman of the Constitutional Committee that drafted the Constitution of Papua New Guinea. As the first minister for decentralization, he was responsible for the establishment of 19 provincial governments in Papua New Guinea. From 1999 to 2005, John Momis was governor of Bougainville. He resigned to run for president in the first elections to the Bougainville Autonomous Government in 2005. Momis came in second behind Joseph Kabui .

Momis played a leading role in the negotiations that led to the Bougainville Peace Accords and then the granting of autonomy to Bougainville.

During his political career, Momis was Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Service in Michael Somare's government in 1985 , and Papua New Guinea's Ambassador to the People's Republic of China from July 2007 to January 9, 2010 . Since June 9, 2010, he has been the elected President of the Bougainville Autonomous Region of Papua New Guinea. Momis won the presidential election with around 40,000 votes, while the runner-up, outgoing President James Tanis, received around 16,000 votes.
