James Tanis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

James Tanis (* 1965 ) is a politician from Papua New Guinea . From January 6, 2009 to June 10, 2010 he was president of the autonomous province of Bougainville . Previously, he was Vice President of the Bougainville People's Congress party .

Tanis grew up in the village of Panam near Lamane , on the border between southern and central Bougainville .

Presidential elections were held in Bougainville in November and December 2008 because James Tanis's predecessor, President Joseph Kabui , died of a heart attack during his tenure in June 2008 . 14 candidates stood for election. With 13,547 votes, James Tanis won ahead of Sam Akoitai. Turnout was low, roadblocks and local disputes prevented voters from voting, and complaints from many Bougainvilleers that their names were not on the electoral roll. Tanis was sworn in on January 6, 2009. The election of 43-year-old Tanis marks a generation change in the management of Bougainville.

The main focus of his government work is the promotion of unity and the elimination of the consequences of the civil war. On January 19, 2009, Tanis appointed Ezekiel Massat as Vice President.
