John Phillips (politician, 1770)

John Phillips (born November 26, 1770 - † May 29, 1823 ) was an American politician who is best known today as the first mayor of Boston . He held this office from May 1, 1822 to May 29, 1823. He was also a judge on the Court of Common Pleas . In 1810 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

He was married to Sally Walley. They are parents of the abolitionist Wendell Phillips .

The Phillips School on the corner of Pinckney and Anderson Street in Boston was named after John Phillips . It was completed in 1825.
