John Potter (Bishop)
John Potter (born around 1674 in Wakefield , Yorkshire; † October 10, 1747 ) was Archbishop of Canterbury from 1737 until his death in 1747 . Potter was married to Elizabeth Venner.
Life
John Potter was the son of a white goods retailer from Wakefield ( Yorkshire ). At the age of fourteen he entered Oxford University College . From 1694 he was a lecturer at Lincoln College , Oxford. In 1704 he became a chaplain under Archbishop Thomas Tenison . A good ten years later, in 1715, he became Bishop of Oxford .
He published several theological works, including 1707 the " Discourse on Church Government " ( Discourse on Church Government ), and he played a prominent role in the dispute with Benjamin Hoadly , Bishop of Bangor . From 1708 to 1737 he was Royal Professor of Theology at Oxford University ( Regius Professor of Divinity ). In this function he had a meeting with Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf in 1737 . Potter was a supporter of the Whigs . He was made Archbishop of Canterbury on February 9, 1737.
