John Powers

John Powers (* 1957 ) is an American professor of Asian studies and the history of religion . He currently teaches at the Australian National University in Canberra .

Life

Powers studied at Holy Cross College in Worcester , Massachusetts , where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Religious Studies in 1979 . In 1984 he graduated with a Master of Arts in Indian Philosophy from McMaster University in Hamilton , Ontario . In 1991 he received his PhD in Religious History from the University of Virginia . Powers has been with the Australian National University since 1995 and was appointed to the Chair of the Faculty of Asian Studies there in 2008.

Powers is a practicing Buddhist and is considered an expert on Tibetan Buddhism . As the country's leading expert, he was invited by the Dalai Lama's office in Australia to celebrate the 70th birthday of Tendzin Gyatsho . In addition to specialist books on Buddhist spirituality and meditation techniques , Power produced numerous translations of Tibetan writings and commentaries on them and published works on the culture and history of Tibet, India and China.

Powers advocates Tibetan autonomy and compares the Chinese attitude towards the population of Tibet with that of the Europeans towards the Aborigines at the time of the early colonization of Australia .
