John R. Kirtley
John Robert Kirtley (born August 27, 1949 in Palo Alto ) is an American solid-state physicist.
Kirtley studied at the University of California, Santa Barbara with a bachelor's degree in 1971 and a doctorate in physics in 1976. As a post-doctoral student he was at the University of Pennsylvania and from 1978 he was at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center .
He researched the spectroscopy of inelastic tunnel electrons, superconductivity in non-equilibrium, surface enhanced Raman scattering , light-emitting tunnel junctions, electron heating in silicon dioxide, scanning tunneling microscopy at low temperatures. In particular, he developed a scanning tunneling microscope with SQUID and used it in solid-state physics (superconductivity).
In 1998, he and Dale J. van Harlingen , Donald Ginsberg and Chang C. Tsuei received the Oliver E. Buckley Condensed Matter Prize for phase-sensitive experiments to elucidate the orbital symmetry of the pair wave function in high-temperature superconductors (laudation). He is a fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a senior member of the IEEE .
