John Henry Reynolds (1874-1949)

John Henry Reynolds ( 1874 - 1949 ) was a British astronomer and between 1935-1937 President of the Royal Astronomical Society . His field of work was the classification of stars.

John Reynolds was the son of Alfred John Reynolds, temporarily Lord Mayor of Birmingham and owner of a company that made nails using a cutting process . An amateur, he was elected a member of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1899, at the age of 25 . In 1907 he financed the construction of the 30-inch mirror telescope in Helwan , Egypt , the first larger telescope for studying the southern sky. He also built a 28-inch telescope himself in Birmingham.
