John Singleton Copley (born July 3, 1738 in Boston , † September 9, 1815 in London ) was an American-English painter .

Life

Copley visited Italy from 1774 to 1776 and became a member of the Royal Academy of Arts in London in 1779 . In 1791 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

His most outstanding works are: the death of Chatham, the death of Major Peirson , King Charles I in Parliament; a large sea and battle picture depicting the moment when the Dutch admiral de Winter hands over his sword to Duncan; the family of King George III. , the Battle of Trafalgar. Green, W. Humfred, Dunkarton, Piquenot, et al. a. stabbed him.

Copley died in London on September 9, 1815. His son is the Lord Chancellor John Singleton Copley, 1st Baron Lyndhurst .
