Life

Stauber grew up in a conservative Republican family in Marshfield , Wisconsin , but became a peace and environmentalist activist in high school due to the Vietnam War .

His book Toxic Waste, written with Sheldon Rampton , makes you slim. Media professionals, spin doctors, PR wizards. The Truth About The Public Relations Industry traces the history of PR, from its beginnings at PT Barnum and Edward Bernays to the powerful PR firms of today that campaigned in business (tobacco industry) and politics (election campaigns) as well have a decisive influence on the daily work of newspapers and magazines.

Further topics of his books are mad cow disease BSE ( Mad Cow USA ) and the Iraq war . In July 2003, again with Sheldon Rampton, he wrote Weapons of Mass Deception: The Uses of Propaganda in Bush's War on Iraq , claiming that the Bush administration led the US into war under false pretenses. In 2004 the book Banana Republicans followed , which tries to show how the Republican Party is transforming the USA into a one-party state.

In 1993 Stauber founded the Center for Media and Democracy (CMD) in Madison , of which he was director until 2009. The CMD publishes the quarterly magazine PR Watch and supports SourceWatch financially. Regarding the state of journalism under cost pressure (there is more and more paid PR and less and less paid journalistic work, time for research, etc.) he says: "Instead of uncovering propaganda , the media have become the channel for propaganda."
