John Steenhuisen (2010)

John Henry Steenhuisen (born March 25, 1976 in Durban ) is a South African politician ( Democratic Alliance , DA). He has been parliamentary group leader and opposition leader in the National Assembly since October 2019, and acting party chairman of the DA since November 2019 .

Life

Steenuisen attended the English-speaking Northwood Boys High School in Durban from 1989 to 1993, from which he graduated with a Matric . He has no tertiary education , for which he is occasionally criticized.

Steenhuisen began his political career in the Democratic Party , which merged into the DA in 2000. In 1999 he was elected to the Durban City Council. He was a member of the eThekwini City Council until 2009. He was then elected provincial chairman of the DA for KwaZulu-Natal and became a member of the Provincial Legislature of the same province. He had to give up the office of chairman in 2010 after he began a relationship with Terry Kass Beaumont, the provincial spokeswoman for the DA and wife of another high-ranking party friend.

He has been a member of the National Assembly since July 2011.

From April 2014 to October 2019, Steenhuisen was Chief Whip of the DA in the National Assembly. After Mmusi Maimane's resignation as opposition leader - in the wake of Helen Zille's rise to high party office - he also resigned, but was elected to Maimane's position on October 27 without any opponents. Shortly afterwards he was also acting chairman (Interim Federal Leader) of the DA.

Steenhuisen lives in Umhlanga . From 2000 to 2010 he was married to Julie Steenhuisen, nee Wright, with whom he has two daughters. In 2014 he married Terry Kass Beaumont, with whom he has a daughter.

Positions

In the course of the COVID-19 pandemic , Steenhuisen is taking legal action against several restrictions imposed by the government of the African National Congress . Above all, he fears negative consequences for the economy.

Like two other DA members, Steenhuisen is aiming for the position of party chairman. An election meeting planned for April / May 2020 had to be canceled due to the pandemic. Steenhuisen is in favor of an election in October, possibly via video conference.
