John Stubbs

John Stubbs (also John Stubbe ; * around 1543, † 1591 ) was an English politician .

Stubbs was educated at Trinity College , Cambridge , and was Thomas Cartwright's brother-in-law . In 1579 he published a pamphlet that attacked the marriage plans of Queen Elizabeth I Tudor of England with the Duke of Anjou, François-Hercule de Valois, duc d'Alençon . He was sentenced for this and his right hand was cut off. During the execution of the sentence, he is said to have waved his hat with the other hand to pledge his loyalty to the queen. He later wrote a reply to William Allen and became a Member of Parliament in the House of Commons in 1589 .
