John Swann

John Swann (* 1760 in Pasquotank , Pasquotank County , North Carolina Province; †  1793 ibid) was an American politician . In 1788 he was a delegate for North Carolina to the Continental Congress .

Career

John Swann was born on the family's own plantation The Elms . He later took over this plantation and ran it. After graduating from the College of William & Mary in Virginia and returning to his plantation, he married Penelope Johnston, the daughter of future Governor Samuel Johnston . In 1788, after the resignation of delegate John Ashe, he was appointed his successor in the Continental Congress. He exercised this mandate between March 22nd and November 1st, 1788. Swann was firmly committed to ratifying the United States Constitution . Otherwise he managed his plantation until his unexpected death in 1793. In the last years of his life he enjoyed such a high reputation among his contemporaries that he was under discussion as a future governor or US senator .
