Ioannis Travlos

Ioannis Travlos ( Greek Ιωάννης Τραυλός , mostly John Travlos; * 1908 in Rostov-on-Don ; † October 28, 1985 in Athens ) was a Greek architect and building researcher .

Travlos was born the son of a Greek from Naxos living in Rostov, Russia . In 1912 the family moved to Athens. Here Travlos studied architecture at the Technical University , where he received his diploma in 1931 and his doctorate in 1955. His most important teacher there was Anastasios Orlandos .

In 1935 Travlos became the architect of the American Agora excavation , from 1940 until retirement in 1973 he was the architect of all excavations of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens .

At the agora was Travlos u. a. responsible for the reconstruction of the Stoa of Attalus and the Church of the Apostles. Travlos was involved in numerous excavations in Athens and all of Greece (including Eleusis, Megara, Isthmia, Corinth, Eretria).

His most important publications include the pictorial encyclopedias published by the German Archaeological Institute on the topography of ancient Athens and ancient Attica .
