John W. Hutchinson

John Woodside Hutchinson (born April 10, 1939 in Hartford , Connecticut ) is an American engineer.

Life

Hutchinson received his bachelor's degree in engineering from Lehigh University in 1960 and received his PhD from Harvard University in 1963 with Bernard Budiansky . In 1964 he became Assistant Professor , 1968 Associate Professor and 1969 Gordon McKay Professor of Applied Mechanics at Harvard. He is known for his contributions to the elasto-plastic theory of fracture mechanics (Hutchsinon-Rice-Rosengren theory, 1968).

Recently, Hutchinson has dealt with the application of plasticity theory to microscopic scales and mechanical problems with ceramic protective layers against heat (Thermal Barrier Coatings, TBC).

In 1991 he received the William Prager Medal and the Arpad Nadai Award, in 1982 the George R. Irwin Medal and in 2002 the Tymoshenko Medal . In 2012 he received the Ludwig Prandtl Ring . He is an honorary doctor from the Royal Stockholm University of Technology and the Technical University of Denmark. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences , the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the National Academy of Engineering .

He has been married since 1964 and has three children.
