John de Clinton, 3rd Baron Clinton

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

John de Clinton, 3rd Baron Clinton (around 1325 - September 6, 1398 ) was an English nobleman and politician.

Origin and family

He came from a noble English family living in Warwickshire . His paternal uncle was William Clinton, 1st Earl of Huntingdon , whose civil heir he became, while whose title as Earl of Huntingdon expired for lack of direct male heirs. This inheritance was on March 28, 1347 by King Edward III. accepted. The future 3rd Baron was born around 1325 as the son of John de Clinton, 2nd Baron Clinton .

Life

After he was previously knighted, John de Clinton took part in the war in France. He fought in 1356 in the Battle of Poitiers . When his father died in 1335 he inherited his title as 3rd Baron Clinton , but could not yet join the royal council because of his minority. This only happened through Writ of Summons from December 15, 1357. From this point on to November 5, 1397 he was by the kings Edward III. and Richard II regularly convene to the meetings of the House of Lords .

On May 30, 1377, the king sent him to his estate near Folkestone with the task of organizing the English defense against a feared French invasion, which then did not take place. From 1380 he took part again in the English campaign in France. The king rewarded him richly: he transferred the lands of the outlawed Earl of Warwick to him in 1390 and appointed him Constable of Warwick Castle , an office which he held until 1397.

John de Clinton was married four times, most recently to Elizabeth, the widow of Baron Gray of Rotherfield, with whom he had married without permission in 1388. The lack of permission was then made up for later. He died on September 6, 1398 and was the 4th Baron Clinton to be inherited by his grandson William de Clinton, as his father had died before John de Clinton.
