Baron Clinton is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of England .

First award

The title was created on February 6, 1299 for Sir John de Clinton when he was appointed to the royal parliament by Writ of Summons .

The 9th Baron was promoted to Earl of Lincoln (eighth bestowal) in 1572 . When the 5th Earl died on November 25, 1692, the Clinton Barony fell in Abeyance .

On March 15, 1721, the title was restored to Hugh Fortescue , who was elevated to Earl Clinton and Baron Fortescue , of Castle Hill in the County of Devon on July 5, 1749 in the Peerage of Great Britain , the latter with the special addition that the Barony Fortescue could also be passed on to his half-brother and his male descendants. On his death on May 2, 1751, his Earldom went out, the Barony of Fortescue fell to his half-brother Matthew Fortescue (1719–1785), whose son rose to Earl Fortescue in 1789 , and the Barony of Clinton fell again in Abeyance.

On March 14, 1760, the Abeyance was ended in favor of Margaret Rolle as the 15th Baroness Clinton. On July 5, 1957, on the death of the 21st Baron, the title fell again in Abeyance and was restored on March 18, 1965 for Gerald Fane-Trefusis as 22nd Baron Clinton. He still holds the title today.

Second award

On September 6, 1330, William de Clinton , the brother of the 2nd Baron, first bestowal by Writ of Summons, was also appointed to the Royal Parliament and thus another Barony of Clinton was created.
