Life

John Clinton was an English nobleman and soldier who fought in the Hundred Years' War and the Wars of the Roses . He was the son of William de Clinton, 4th Baron Clinton. Initially, John Clinton was loyal to the House of Lancaster and King Henry VI. , under which he was called to parliament four times.

He was sent to France by the king and served under Richard Plantagenet, 3rd Duke of York from 1439 to 1441 in the English army. There he was in command of the garrison at Pontoise . In 1441 the garrison fell, and Baron Clinton was imprisoned for six years until he was released by paying 1,000 marks.

Things changed in late 1459 and John Clinton turned to the House of York . He was held accountable for this, lost all of his Bill of Attainder rights in 1460 , his possessions were confiscated and fell to Owen Tudor , among others .

In October 1459 ( Battle of Ludlow ) and July 1460 ( Battle of Northampton ) he fought on the side of the Yorks, along with the troops of Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick . In the decisive victory of the House of York at the Battle of Towton , Baron Clinton fought alongside Edward, Earl of March, who later became Edward IV.

According to isolated sources, Baron Clinton fought on the side of York in the First Battle of St Albans as early as 1455 .

After the coronation of Edward IV in 1461, John Clinton was fully rehabilitated and received the title of Keeper of the seas along with William Neville, 1st Earl of Kent and John Howard, 1st Duke of Norfolk . They then sailed with an army of 10,000 men to Brittany, where they captured the city of Conquet .

In 1463, John Clinton accompanied the king on a campaign north, where he took part in the sieges of Bamburgh Castle , Dunstanburgh Castle and Alnwick Castle .

Up until his death he was appointed to parliament twice by Edward IV.

John Clinton, 5th Baron Clinton, died on September 24, 1464.
