Earl Fortescue is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Great Britain .

Awards and subordinate titles

The title was created on September 1, 1789 for Hugh Fortescue, 3rd Baron Fortescue . Along with the earliest title, he was given the subordinate title Viscount Ebrington, of Ebrington in the County of Gloucester .

As early as 1785 he had inherited the title Baron Fortescue , of Castle Hill in the County of Devon , from his father Matthew Fortescue, 2nd Baron Fortescue , which has since been used as a subordinate title of the Earl. This had been awarded on July 5, 1746 to his half-brother Hugh Fortescue, 14th Baron Clinton , together with the title Earl Clinton , who had inherited the title Baron Clinton in 1721 . The Earldom of Clinton was extinguished on his death in 1751, the Barony of Clinton in Abeyance and later fell to another line of the family, only the Barony of Fortescue was awarded with a special addition that it fell to Matthew Fortescue.
