Jon Idigoras

Jon Idigoras (born May 3, 1936 in Amorebieta-Etxano , Basque Country , Spain ; † June 3, 2005 in Bilbao ; actually Juan Cruz Idigoras Gerrikabeitia ) was the founder of the ETA- affiliated, banned Basque separatist party Herri Batasuna (“Unity of People ”) and one of the most prominent representatives of the movement for the independence of the Basque Country .

As a young man, he joined a number of political associations and was captured frequently between 1958 and 1974. Later, as spokesman for Herri Batasuna, Idigoras was arrested several times. In his autobiography "El hijo de Juanita Gerrikabeitia" (The son of Juanita Gerrikabeitia) he describes the events of his eventful political life.

The current head of the Batasuna, Arnaldo Otegi , told a newspaper that Idigoras had asked him on his deathbed to find a democratic and peaceful solution. Idigoras died as a result of a lung disease .
