Jonathan C. Cohen is a nutritionist and internist at the Eugene McDermott Center for Human Growth and Development at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas . He is best known for his work on the genetic factors that affect serum levels of lipoproteins and cholesterol .

Cohen received a Ph.D. from the University of Cape Town in 1989. and then went to the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center as a postdoctoral fellow , where he has worked since. Here he runs a research laboratory together with the geneticist Helen Hobbs .

Cohen studies genetic disorders that predispose to common conditions like coronary artery disease and fatty liver . Together with his research partner, he identified genes that play an important role in the metabolism of fats , cholesterol and triglycerides , and contributed to the elucidation of the biological function of the proteins that are encoded by these genes. Cohen showed that loss-of-function mutations of PCSK9 result in reduced cholesterol levels and offer protection against coronary heart disease. Hobbs and Cohen also identified the first genetic cause of non-alcoholic fatty liver in humans.

2016 Cohen and Hobbs were the Passano Award of the Passano Foundation Award, a prestigious US science award, the carrier often later a Nobel Prize received.
