characters

main characters

Levi Donselaar is very popular with the girls. He is handsome, confident, and has only one goal: to become a head chef and own his own restaurant. Levi comes from a poor family and knows very well what he wants to achieve. He's got a lot of confidence and no one will see him in a moment when he's weak. Levi has a dream and nothing and nobody can stop him. He was given the opportunity to develop into a true chef at the culinary institute, which he does. Levi is impulsive and loud, but has a heart of gold. He gets on very well with Thomas. They often agree, but if they don't, the situation threatens to spiral out of control.

Sophie Deudermonde is a creative girl, but she still has a lot to learn in the culinary institute to be a good cook. She gets special support from Levi. Sophie grew up without parents. Her mother died at a young age and she never met her father. She was raised by her grandparents who now live in a nursing home. Sophie and Levi were neighbors and grew up together. They are best friends and both attend the cooking institute. They have a great secret together ...

Thomas Nimmermeer is a helpful boy, but sometimes a little too stubborn. Due to his own strong will, he occasionally gets into arguments with the other course participants. Thomas loves to eat with his family. He likes socializing, preferably with food in the lead. Everything that has to do with food receives his full attention. Thomas helps his friends a lot. However, his persistent behavior often ensures that others do not interpret it as help. In this context, it is not always easy for Thomas because he does not mean it badly. Thomas wants to belong everywhere. He enjoys doing activities with other people, but is annoyed if he is not invited. Thomas isn't sure everyone likes him, although often they do.

Marie-Elise Wolf comes from a rich family. Her parents own a large hotel and restaurant where her father cooks. The two want Marie to work as head chef in the family business after her time at the cooking institute. Although Marie finds it easy to prepare a perfect dish, Marie inwardly doubts whether she even wants to go the path that her parents intended for her, which is why she often thinks about an alternative career. Marie is very ambitious and works hard. This is because Marie believes that others are convinced that she will get everything in the gold bowl because she comes from a rich family, and wants to prove that she can do it without her rich parents.

Aram Dupont is a true entertainer and often self-absorbed. It has charm and flair at the same time. Aram dresses very boldly, as if to say, “Here I am, do you see me?” Aram likes to be the center of attention and is very concerned about his appearance. For Aram, success means everything, regardless of the area in which he is successful. Aram learns very quickly, for example he can present dishes and recipes excellently like no other. Aram doesn't seem to take life that seriously either. He likes to joke, even in serious situations, which is why he often gets the attention of his classmates and teachers. So it's not surprising that Aram tends to avoid serious discussions. Aram has rich parents, but they are mostly concerned with themselves, which is why he is happy to be at the culinary institute to get a sense of family here - because he needs someone who also listens to his jokes.

A Schippersinternaat in Amsterdam (1948)

Caroline de Vries is the daughter of a skipper and has so far sailed the Rhine with her parents. But then the time came when her parents were no longer able to teach her, which is why Caroline was given the choice: Either she goes to the cooking institute or she has to go to a Schippersinternaat (in German: Skipper boarding school, is a special boarding school in the Netherlands, where children whose parents are often on the road can be accommodated in order to attend their compulsory schooling) . Caroline likes to cook, but you can tell that she would rather eat with her parents because she is terribly homesick. To hide this, she has built armor between herself and the rest of the world, which means that Caroline hides behind squeamish gestures, princess mannerisms and an exaggerated stupidity. But in reality, Caroline misses her parents, even though she sometimes wishes that her parents could lead a normal life so that everyone can be together.

Minor characters

Fons Mastoer is the "grandfather of the cooking institute" and the father of the director Dina. He lives in the cooking institute that was his home in the past and is now looked after there by Dina and Mrs. Koning. Mr Mastoer himself does not want to admit that he needs to be looked after. Mr. Fons, as he is known for short, is possibly the biggest child at the culinary institute, because besides being open to the students and the staff, he is also the initiator of a multitude of fantastic adventures, which his daughter Dina often disapproves of.

Dina Mastoer is an attractive slim woman who always walks around in businesslike clothes and is the head of the cooking institute. She attaches great importance to order and regularity and cannot do without a to-do list. Dina has turned her facility into an institute that produces the country's great chefs. She teaches her students the fine manners in the hotel and hospitality industry. These include the following lessons: “How do I walk upright?”, “How do I serve my guests?” Or “How do I make a bed?”. In short: the basics of a career in the hospitality industry.

Veerle de Keulenaer is a staunch vegetarian and a great advocate of organic food. That is why she has created her own biological paradise behind the cooking institute. The biological paradise is home to a vegetable garden with vegetables and herbs as well as various animals that live in free range. Veerle always has an open ear for the children, even if they regard her as unworldly. She is an excellent listener and it seems like she wanted to have children herself. But so far she has not found the right man, even though she has her eye on Rens.

Eddy de Koning is a former cyclist who now works as a caretaker in the cooking institute. He and his wife Sylvia live in the cooking institute and are mother and father to the students. In addition, both of them maintain order in the cooking institute, take care of the well-being of the students and are responsible for their food supply.

Sylvia de Koning is the curvy and spoiled wife of Eddy. Eddy had a successful life as a cyclist when Sylvia married him, and she was a podium girl who congratulated him on his umpteenth win. But now both of them spend their days together in the cooking institute's boarding school. The couple manage the site, school and boarding school and try their best, but it is difficult to keep things going.

Rens Mesker is a young, enthusiastic and infectiously creative cook in the culinary institute and the most popular teacher among the children. He always dresses casually in jeans and smart shirts and has a natural, businesslike style. Rens follows the thesis: "You are what you eat, and to be popular you have to eat good food, and you can do that through creativity". And to that end, Rens tries to encourage students to repeat each lesson over and over in an unusual way. Rens himself is therefore often in conflict with Dina, who has little left for his experiments.
