Jorge Nocedal

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jorge Nocedal (* around 1952) is a Mexican physicist and mathematician who deals with nonlinear mathematical optimization and numerical mathematics.

Nocedal studied physics from 1970 at the National University of Mexico with a bachelor's degree in 1974 and then mathematics at Rice University with a doctorate in 1978 under Richard Tapia (On the method of conjugate gradients for function minimization). He was then assistant professor at the National University of Mexico, 1981 to 1983 at the Courant Institute and from 1983 assistant professor and later professor in the faculty of electrical engineering and computer science at Northwestern University .

In 2012 he received the George B. Dantzig Prize and in 2010 the Charles Broyden Prize. In 2010 he became a SIAM Fellow. In 1998 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Berlin (Nonlinear Optimization: The Interplay Between Mathematical Characterizations and Algorithms). In 2017, Nocedal was awarded the John von Neumann Theory Prize of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences . In 2020 he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering .

In 2004 he was one of the ISI Highly Cited Researchers. He has been editor of the SIAM Journal of Optimization since 2010.
