José Batlle y Ordóñez , usually just called Batlle y Ordóñez , is a city in Uruguay .
geography
It is located in the north of the Lavalleja department in its 12th sector on the border with the neighboring Florida department and the directly adjoining Nico Pérez . To the north-east of the village is the Cerro Nico Pérez , as well as the eponymous Cuchilla , in which the Arroyo del Sauce (Arroyo Sauce) also rises, which flows past the edge of the city . The Parque Municipal "Cerro de Nico Pérez" is also located there . In the southwest, a few kilometers away, is the town of Illescas .
history
The place was founded in 1882 by Francisco De León and the notary Diego L. Alfonsín on the lands of De León. The original name was San Nicolás . At the request of Carlos M. Núñez, the authorized representative Dr. Francisco De Leóns, the city was founded on June 25, 1883 with official approval and was named Nico Pérez . In honor of the former Uruguayan President José Batlle y Ordóñez , the name was changed by law on March 19, 1907 to the current name. The place, whose first inhabitants besides De León included Antonio Sisto, Pedro Acheritogatay, Fructuoso Pereira, Pedro Guasch and Constancio Casas, was demarcated by the surveyor Carlos Burmester.
