José Dirceu de Oliveira e Silva , called José Dirceu [ ʒoˈzɛ dʒiʁˈsew ], (born March 16, 1946 in Passa Quatro , Minas Gerais ) is a Brazilian politician ( PT ).

After the Brazilian coup in 1964 , Dirceu took part in an armed revolutionary group and was exiled in 1969. He returned in 1980 and was politically active until he took over the post of Chief of Staff to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in 2003 . He resigned on allegations of corruption in the context of the Mensalão scandal .

Dirceu was sentenced in November 2012 to ten years and six months in prison and a fine of R $ 676,000 for bribery and the formation of a criminal organization.
