José Luis Vellon

José Luis Vellon (born July 4, 1954 ) is a retired Puerto Rican boxer .

Vellon was Central America and Caribbean champion in 1972 in featherweight (-57 kg) and in 1973 and 1975 in lightweight (-60 kg) and North American champion in 1974 in lightweight. In 1972 he took part in the Olympic Games in Munich , but was eliminated in the preliminary round. Vellon's greatest achievement was winning the bronze medal at the 1974 World Championships . In the semi-finals of the lightweight he was eliminated from the later silver medalist Simion Cuțov , Romania . In the same year he also won a silver medal at the Central American and Caribbean Games .

José Luis Vellon later became the coach and president of the Puerto Rican Boxing Federation.
