Simion Cuțov

Simion Cuțov (born May 7, 1952 in Smârdanul Nou , Brăila County , † 1993 ) was a Romanian boxer . Cuțov was European champion in 1973 and 1975 and silver medalist at the 1976 Olympic Games .

Career

In the junior division (U19) Cuțov won the championships of the Eastern Bloc in Vidin in 1970 and the European championships in Bucharest in 1972 , both in the lightweight category .

Cuțov won the Romanian championships in 1973, 1976 and 1978.

1973 Cuțov won the European lightweight championships in Belgrade with a final victory over the defending champion Ryszard Tomczyk, Poland (5-0). In the following year he also won the Balkan Championship in Constanța and in 1975 again the gold medal at the European Championships , which took place in Katowice that year .

At the 1976 Olympic Games , Cuțov reached after victories over New Year's Eve Mittee , United Kingdom (after cancellation), Nelson Calzadilla, Venezuela (5-0), Ove Lundby, Sweden (5-0), and Wassili Solomin , Soviet Union (5-0) , the final. In this he faced the American Howard Davis , to whom he was defeated with 5-0 judges' votes.

1977 Cuțov was eliminated in the first fight against George Gilbody, England (4: 1), but won the same year in the light welterweight (-63.5 kg) the police championships of the Eastern Bloc in Ulaanbaatar . In the following year it was enough for him in the same competitions only for the silver medal. In 1979 he again won the Balkan Championships and again the silver medal in the Police Championships.

In 1980 Cuțov qualified again for the Olympic Games , but was eliminated here in the first fight against the later silver medalist Serik Konakbajew , Soviet Union (5-0), whereupon he ended his career. In 1993 he died of cirrhosis of the liver . His older brother Calistrat (* 1948) was also a boxer and Olympian.
