José María Medina (born February 13, 1921 in Paysandú , † October 16, 2005 ) was a Uruguayan football player .

Career

society

Offensive player Medina was at the beginning of his career from 1939 to 1944 in the ranks of the Montevideo Wanderers . In 1945 and 1946 he played for Nacional Montevideo in the Primera División . In 1946 the "Bolsos" won the Uruguayan championship. In 1947 he moved to Argentina to join the Newell's Old Boys . For this club he was active until 1948. In the years 1949 to 1952 he belonged again to the squad of the Montevideo Wanderers and rose with them in the final phase of his career in 1952 as a champion of Primera B after relegation in the meantime back to the top Uruguayan league. In both phases of the Wanderers club membership, he played 211 games and scored 92 goals.

National team

Medina belonged to the senior national team of Uruguay , for which he completed 15 international matches and scored eleven international goals between February 23, 1941 and April 1, 1947. With the Celeste he took part in the South American Championships in 1941 and 1946 . In the latter case, he was the top scorer of the tournament with seven goals scored .
