José Robles (literary scholar)
José Robles Pazos (* 1897 in Santiago de Compostela ; † 1937 ) was a Spanish writer, draftsman and translator.
Robles was a good friend of the author John Dos Passos . He taught Spanish literature at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore in the 1920s . In 1936 he was in Spain when civil war broke out there. Robles immediately sided with the Republicans. At the beginning of 1937 he suddenly disappeared. Allegedly he was shot as a Franco spy. However, it is believed that because of his independent leftist views, he became a victim of the Soviet secret service NKVD . His death led to a falling out between Dos Passos and Ernest Hemingway .
