José Rodrigues Coelho do Amaral (born May 15, 1808 in Lisbon , † December 14, 1873 in Mozambique ) was a Portuguese colonial administrator and politician .

Life

José Rodrigues Coelho do Amaral was brigadier general of the engineering force and in 1854 succeeded Miguel Ximenes Gomes Rodrigues Sandoval de Castro e Viegas for the first time as governor general of Angola . He remained in this post until 1860 and was then replaced by Carlos Augusto Franco . On June 22, 1863, he took over the office of Governor of Macau from Isidoro Francisco Guimarães and held this office until October 26, 1866, when Jose Maria da Ponte e Horta succeeded him. On January 4, 1868 he was Minister for the Navy and Colonies (Ministro da Marinha e do Ultramar) in the first cabinet of Prime Minister António José de Ávila and held this office until July 22, 1868.

Amaral then replaced Francisco António Gonçalves Cardoso as Governor General of Angola in 1868 and thus held this position for the second time until he was replaced by José Maria da Ponte e Horta in 1870. Most recently, on August 25, 1870, he became Governor General of Mozambique and held this office until his death on December 14, 1873.
