José Ruíz Matos (born October 24, 1966 in Trujillo Alto , † February 28, 1997 in San Juan ) was a professional boxer from Puerto Rico and WBO world champion in super flyweight.

Boxing career

He began his professional career in 1984 at the age of 17 and won 12 of his first 14 fights. He suffered his two defeats just on points against the eventual US champion Pedro José Feliciano and the eventual WBO world champion José de Jesús . However, he was able to defeat Feliciano in two rematches. In July 1988 he also defeated the former WBC world champion Prudencio Cardona .

On April 29, 1989, he won the WBO world title in super flyweight by unanimously winning points against ex-WBC world champion Bebis Rojas . However, the WBO was not yet one of the major associations at that time. He became the first WBO title holder in this weight class. His first title defense was spectacular less than five months later against Juan Carazo , when he won by knockout in the first round. He won another title defense in October 1989 by knockout in the twelfth round against Ángel Rosario .

He was also able to successfully defend his title against Wilfredo Vargas and Armando Velasco. It was not until February 22, 1992 that he lost his title by losing points to José Quirino . On July 11, 1992 he played his last boxing match; he lost in the fight for the IBF World Championship just on points against Robert Quiroga .

death

José Ruíz Matos had contacts with a criminal organization that years after his death was sentenced under the RICO Act . On February 28, 1997, he was picked up from home by a member of the group and shot just a few miles away. His body was found the next day.

The perpetrator was only arrested on May 25, 2000 and found guilty of murder. There are different views on the background to the crime. Police believe that he should be silenced because he knew about an upcoming robbery but did not want to participate in it.
