Robert Quiroga (born October 10, 1969 in San Antonio , Texas , † August 16, 2004 there ) was an American boxer and IBF world champion in super flyweight.

Boxing career

Quiroga became US champions in December 1989 and won the IBF world championship title in super flyweight in April 1990 by beating Juan Polo Pérez on points . Until July 1992 he defended the title against Vuyani Nene, Vincenzo Belcastro, Akeem Anifowoshe , Carlos Mercado and José Ruíz Matos , where his fight against Anifowoshe was voted "Fight of the Year" by Ring Magazine .

In January 1993 he lost his title by a knockout defeat to Julio César Borboa and ended his career after another defeat in 1995.

Private

Robert Quiroga, who grew up on the west side of San Antonio, became the first US super flyweight world champion by winning the title in 1990. After his active career, he worked as a car salesman and was inducted into the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame in 2002. On August 16, 2004, Quiroga was stabbed to death at a friend's party during an altercation and sentenced the perpetrator to life imprisonment.
