José Serrato (1926)

José Serrato Bergeróo (born September 30, 1868 in Montevideo , † September 7, 1960 ibid) was a Uruguayan politician , engineer and economist .

Life

Serrato, whose family originally came from Giustenice in the Italian province of Savona , studied mechanical engineering at the Universidad de la República until 1892 . He then initially worked as a mathematics teacher.

He later held a parliamentary mandate and held the ministerial posts for development (1913), finance (1904-1906) and home affairs (1911). Serrato was President of Banco Hipotecario del Uruguay from 1914 to 1922 .

In 1923 Serrato, a member of the Partido Colorado , was elected President of Uruguay from March 1, 1923 to March 1, 1927 . This made him the first president of his home country to take office through the general election introduced under the 1917 constitution. During his term of office, among other things, the negotiation of a border treaty with Argentina, the establishment of the Corte Electoral , the establishment of a pension fund and the opening of the Palacio Legislativo . His successor in the office of president was Juan Campisteguy .

In 1942 he was a member of the Consejo de Estado , which was responsible for drafting the 1942 constitution. Between March 1, 1943 and October 4, 1945 he also took over the management of the Foreign Ministry .
