education and profession

Oelz was the son of master tanner Josef Anton Oelz (1783–1853) and his wife Anna Maria Huber (1787–1845). His parents were born in Dornbirn and died here. He attended elementary school in his birthplace Dornbirn-Haselstauden and then graduated from high school in Feldkirch and high school in Brixen from 1825 to 1828. He passed the Matura in Feldkirch and then studied theology in Brixen for a year. In 1833 he began studying medicine, which he pursued at the universities of Rome, Padua and Vienna. On April 22, 1850 he finally received his doctorate in medicine from the University of Vienna . As a result, Oelz practiced professionally as a doctor in Dornbirn. He remained single throughout his life.

Politics and functions

Oelz was elected member of the House of Representatives in the constituency of the rural communities of the Bregenz district in 1870 and was sworn in as a member on September 15, 1870. As a result he belonged to the House of Representatives from the III. up to the 7th legislative period or from the 6th to the 10th session, whereby he was a member of parliament until the end of the 7th legislative period in January 1891. Before that, in 1890, he was also the senior president and was a member of the right-wing party. At the same time he was from 1870 to 1884 during the III. Up to the fifth legislative period, he was also a member of the Vorarlberg state parliament, where he held a mandate in the Bregenz-Bregenzerwald electoral district. Oelz was particularly involved in budget debates in the House of Representatives and took part in the discussion about the regulation of the external legal relationships of the monastic cooperatives. His other political issues were the Catholic Church and schools, as well as finance, the army, customs and trade issues. After Oelz had sanctioned the emergency election law in 1872, he was severely criticized by his party comrades. He then resigned his mandate in December 1872, but was re-elected by the Vorarlberg state parliament. However, he declined to be re-elected and subsequently did not appear in the House of Representatives. His resignation was subsequently announced at the meeting on February 15, 1873.

Oelz was a founding member of the Dornbirn Casino.
