Josef Diem

Josef Kaspar Diem (born June 17, 1900 in Dornbirn ; † April 2, 1962 there ) was an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ) and a commercial employee. From 1954 to 1962 he was a member of the Vorarlberg state parliament .

education and profession

After primary school in Dornbirn, Diem completed two classes at the Dornbirn secondary school and a commercial apprenticeship in southern Germany. He served in the First World War in 1918 and was active in the cooperative movement from 1920. After the Social Democratic Party was banned, Diem was taken out of service by the Heimwehr in 1934 and was under temporary surveillance until 1935. During the Second World War, Diem had to do military service again between 1943 and 1945, after which he became head of the purchasing department of the Vorarlberg consumer cooperative in 1945.

Politics and functions

Diem joined the Social Democratic Party in 1920 and was active within the party between 1951 and 1954 as city party chairman of the SPÖ Dornbirn. He was also deputy city party chairman from 1954 to 1962. At the state level he worked as a member of the state party presidency of the SPÖ Vorarlberg and state treasurer of the SPÖ Vorarlberg.

Diem was sworn in on May 27, 1947 as a member of the city council of Dornbirn. He worked as a city councilor until his death and was also a member of the local economic, medical, hospital and inspection committee as well as a member of the wine and must tax commission. As a member of the Feldkirch constituency , he was a member of the Vorarlberg state parliament from October 29, 1954 until his death. In the state parliament he was a member of the economic committee, a member of the social policy committee and a member of the agricultural committee.

Diem acted from 1946 to 1962 as a councilor of the Vorarlberg Chamber of Labor and was a member of the Economic Committee of the Vorarlberg Chamber of Labor. He was a member of the Feldkirch district supply committee, member and chairman of the control commission of the ÖGB, state executive Vorarlberg and deputy chairman of the Vorarlberg regional health insurance fund. Furthermore, he was involved as chairman of the union of private employees in Dornbirn, as chairman of the ÖGB local group Dornbirn and as a member of the board of the Dornbirner Sparkasse. He was a member and state treasurer of Vorarlberger Volkshilfe and a member of Vorarlberger Naturfreunde.

Private

Diem was born as the son of the technician Josef Diem (* 1873) and his wife, the maid Theresia Diem née Mack from Erbach (* 1873). He married Ida Luger (1901–1985) on October 11, 1926 and had a son and a daughter.
